Collection essentials #205: Kirby’s Avalanche (SNES)
This is another adaptation of the Japanese puzzle game Puyo Puyo. I previously covered Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine on the Sega Genesis, which is also such an adaptation. To read more about Puyo Puyo including how the gameplay works, please refer to that post.
So Kirby’s Avalanche is basically Puyo Puyo with Kirby characters, settings and music. It’s particularly notable because it’s a very rare case of Kirby speaking coherent sentences. Normally, Kirby is a silent protagonist who can’t say anything other than “Hi!” and apparent gibberish. This is just a spinoff game that’s not canon to the series, so they were able to get away with such a radical departure.
There could possibly be small gameplay differences between this game, Puyo Puyo and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, but I’m not going to go through the lengths it would take to figure it out for myself.
If you want some Puyo Puyo gameplay, odds are you would turn to a newer game in the series rather than this one, unless you’re in a particularly “Kirby” mood. Which, to be fair, you very well could be.
