Collection essentials #26: Warlords (2600)


I don’t have a ton to say about this one, it’s pretty straightforward and fun! It’s basically Pong for four players, with each person guarding a different corner of the screen. Again, four-player in the Atari days was really rare and awesome! Always a great choice when the friends be hangin’.

Here’s a case of “How the heck did this actually get released in America?” This game features retro-looking 2D graphics at a time when the next generation of consoles featuring impressive 3D graphics was bursting onto the scene. It’s based on the Dragon Warrior series which wasn’t especially popular in America, and a new mainline entry hadn’t even come out there in years. It’s a dungeon-crawling roguelike, which was not a popular or well-known genre at all back then in the States. And yet, here we are. According to the internet, it happened because the translation team wanted to make it happen and worked on it for less pay than normal.  The main character of this game is Torneko, a shopkeeper who was one of the protagonists from Dragon Quest IV. Collection essentials #561: Pac-Man Vs. / Pac-Man World 2 (GC)

Pac-Man World 2 is a platformer that had previously been released as a standalone title in 2002. It’s an adequate 3D platformer that sold pretty well thanks to featuring Pac-Man, and in my opinion the coolest thing about it is that you can unlock some old arcade Pac-Man games to freely play. This game is not what this post is going to primarily be about, as I want to focus on the game that it’s bundled with.  Pac-Man Vs. is a game that Shigeru Miyamoto himself, King Nintendo, was largely responsible for. The game was initially designed as a way to show off what can be done with the GBA-to-GC link cable, and Namco (owners of Pac-Man) greenlit Nintendo on making it into a full and proper release. It’s a multiplayer game that’s light on content, so it didn’t make sense for it to be a full-on $50 game by itself on store shelves. But Nintendo found alternative ways to distribute it. Collection essentials #485 & #486: Mega Man Anniversary Collection (Xbox) and Mega Man X Collection (PS2)

In this console generation it started to become much more common for companies to release compilations of their older games. And boy, what a great opportunity this was for Capcom who had made so many Mega Man titles in the previous few console generations!  The Mega Man Anniversary Collection first came out in 2004 (though this Xbox version didn’t until the following year) and contains the six NES Mega Man titles, Mega Man 7 which was originally on SNES, and Mega Man 8 ported from the PlayStation 1 version. They could have done a simple bare-bones release, but thankfully there are all kinds of things to sweeten the package. There are two bonus arcade games included, and special features (sorta like stuff you’d get on a DVD) which vary depending on which version of the game you have.
